Lisronagh National School took part in Agri Aware's Incredible Edibles initiative.
Introduction
Incredible Edibles is a healthy eating project for primary schools. The aim of the project is to educate students about growing fruit and vegetables and to increase their knowledge of food origin and quality.
It also highlights the important role that fresh produce plays in a healthy balanced diet and the importance of consuming at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
Participating schools are sent free grow packs that contain seeds to grow strawberries, potatoes, lettuce, spinach, chives, carrots and turnips, as well as other materials to help them get started growing!

Programme Tasks:
- Food Origin
- Identifying Irish Fruits and Vegetables
- The Growing Element
- Cooking and Preparing Food
- Healthy Eating Week
Task 1 - Learning about Food Origin:
The aim of this task is to get pupils thinking of where food actually comes from, before it reaches your fridge, the kitchen presses and even the supermarket shelves.
Each class watched the Agri Aware videos of local growers and learned how tomatoes, potatoes, mushrooms, spinach and beetroot are grown. They also learned the steps taken to bring each of these foods from the farm to our table.
If anyone would like to watch the videos again at home here is the link to the Agri Aware website www.agriaware.ie/incredible-edibles-programme/ie-schools/ just click on 'Start Task 1' and scroll to the bottom of the page! :)

We designed our own Incredible Edibles Superheroes!
Spring is in the air!
The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit from local farmer Tom Griffin and his sheep and lambs today. They had lots of questions for Tom and loved learning about the animals and how they are cared for. Many thanks again to Tom for taking the time to visit Lisronagh NS. We really appreciate it. 😊🐑🐑

Project Work:
The senior classes split up into groups and did some research on different topics relating to food origin e.g. food products produced in Ireland, where the food in our lunch boxes came from and the steps it went through to get to its current state, labels from popular foods we eat and food products produced here in Tipperary. Their projects were then displayed on our Incredible Edibles board in the corridor of the school.

The junior classes completed the assignment 'Match the produce to the plant'.
First and second classes solved the wordsearch!
Where does our food come from?
The infants learned about where different types of food comes from and showed their learning by completing this Twinkl worksheet.

Task 2 Identifying Irish Produce
This task explores the only official stamp of approval for foods produced in Ireland - the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Mark, as well as topics such as seasonality.
The children in third and fourth class looked for foods at home that have the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Mark.

First and second class also looked for foods they have at home in their fridges and presses that have the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Mark. They had to identify three foods that are produced in Ireland and three foods that are not produced in Ireland. Check out their answers below.

Task 3 The Growing Element:
Planting:
Junior and Senior Infants really enjoyed getting their hands dirty by planting some carrot, grass and spinach seeds. Thanks to the Agri Aware Incredible Edibles team who supplied the school with grow packs with everything we needed to get growing. The children also learned about what plants need in order to grow and about the different parts of a plant. 🌱🌱

Look at our produce:
One of our teachers was busy growing chives, lettuce, spring onions and peas at home. She was good enough to bring them to school to show the children what they look like when grown. She also showed them pictures of potatoes, parsley and tomatoes growing at her home.

Sustainability and recycling:
The earth provides us with fresh air, clean water and food. To protect the earth for future generations, we must take care of it. While you may think that your individual impact on the environment makes no difference, it is important to imagine that if everyone changed one small habit, the global impact would be enormous!
The Infant classroom learned about the importance of recycling for World Earth Day on the 22nd of April - they read the story the Messy Magpie (Twinkl), they learned about the different types of materials that can and cannot be recycled, they sorted items into different bins for recycling and they made a World Earth Day Craft in Art.

Biodiversity - Role of the Bee:
Bees play an important role in pollinating all types of plants which include flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables, as well as many of our wildflowers and trees. A bee flies around to feed on nectar and collect pollen from flowers to bring back to its nest to feed to the baby bees. As it flies from flower to flower, pollen falls off and this is how flowers are pollinated, producing fruits and seeds for new plants to grow! If we lose the bees, the plants cannot grow and many of the global human population will have less fruits, nuts and vegetables to enjoy and these foods will become more expensive.
The Infants learned lots about bees earlier this year.

We made smoothies!
The infant classes made a refreshing treat for themselves after GAA training today. First of all they wrote the steps they needed to follow by doing some procedural writing on how to make a smoothie. They made a smoothie using strawberries, blueberries, banana, orange juice and even a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It certainly was a crowd pleaser. 😂😋🍓🍌🥤

Vegetable soup:
As the weather took a turn for the worse this week, third and fourth class made vegetable soup to warm themselves up. They used carrots, parsnips, garlic and chicken stock. There was a wonderful aroma around the school. The children were left smacking their lips after their lovely cup of soup. They also linked the lesson with some procedural writing.
